Man it's crazy that it's been 20 years since Cobains death. I still remember seeing the announcement on tv even though I was barely 10 years old. I still love Nirvana no matter how mainstream they became. Especially In Utero. That album still holds really well today.
i was a teenager when he died. and while nirvana is not something i throw on regularly now, they were a critical 'gateway' band for me. living in a rural town & in a time before the internet reached the masses, this band changed my world view of music exposing me to flipper, the vaselines, black flag, etc, etc.
that SNL performance of territorial pissings where they trashed their instruments blew my mind.
and yeah, in utero holds up well against anything today.
That's very true. Kurt was very good about exposing the bands underground influences as often as possible. In almost every interview he's done he mentions other bands that are much less known. That's how I learned about Flipper as well and Butthole Surfers and Scratch Acid and Half Japanese.
